William A. Holmes
William A. Holmes passed away peacefully after a brief illness surrounded by his family on November 16th, 2025 William is survived by his wife of 66 years, Charlene (Halloran), his children Keith (Meg), Kurt (Giovanna). Preceded in death by his beloved son, William, brothers, Robert, Thomas, James, sister Patricia and many nieces and nephews. Grandfather to 9 and great grandfather to 8.
Bill was born in South Philadelphia on May 11, 1933. Upon his graduation from Bartram High School, Bill entered the military in 1951 and proudly served as a Corporal in the United States Army, 11th Airborne Division during the Korean War. After an honorable discharge, he began his employment with the Philadelphia Gas Works on July 19, 1955 where he was employed for 34 years in the Fields Services Department. Whether it was responding to major emergencies or residential heating issues, Bill worked tirelessly to keep the citizens of Philadelphia safe. Bill and Charlene started their family in the Olney section of Philadelphia before settling into their permanent residence in Torresdale.
Upon his retirement on March 1, 1989, Bill enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was also a passionate Phillies and Eagles fan and avid coin collector.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Friday, November 21, 2025, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM in Christ the King the Church, 3252 Chesterfield Road, Philadelphia, PA 19114. His funeral mass will begin at 12:30 PM. Interment will be held privately at a later date with full military honors in Washington Crossing National Cemetery.
