Joseph J. LaHart, "Joe" (or "JJ" as he was known to many), was born on June 3, 1934, in Philadelphia, and passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at the age of 91.
Joe’s life was defined by duty, dedication, and an unparalleled love for his family.
After bravely serving in the Infantry, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he returned home to begin his lifelong career with the railroad. He proudly served for 42 years, ultimately retiring from Passenger Service, having become a legend of the Northeast Corridor. His work ethic was unparalleled, matched only by his deep sense of responsibility.
He was a husband to Virginia "Ginny" for 59 years and a dedicated, loving father to his daughters, Christina, Stefanie, and Janine, and son, Joseph. He took immense pride in their accomplishments. Joe didn't just tell his children how to live; he showed them. He instilled in them the importance of unwavering loyalty, confidence, and passion.
Joe's family was his priority and ensured that they always had the best including an education at Nazareth Academy Grade School and High Schools. He found joys in simple moments, like playing cards, a fantastic meal, attending the Eagles games, and watching his grandchildren's many events.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Edna Mayer (née Conway).
Joe is survived by his wife, Ginny; their children: Christina Fanning (Joe), Stefanie LaHart, Janine O’Connor (Jim), his son Joe Costello (Christine); ans his six
beloved grandchildren: Emily, Madeline, JJ, Christian, Joe, and Jack; and his cherished great-granddaughter : Eleanor Mae.
Funeral Services
Family and friends are invited to gather with Joe’s family to celebrate his life on Thursday, December 4, from 9:15 to 9:45 AM at Christ the King Church, 3252 Chesterfield Road. His Funeral Mass will begin promptly at 9:45 AM, where we will honor a devoted family man and proud United States Army veteran.
Following Mass, interment with full U.S. Army Funeral Honors will take place at Washington Crossing National Cemetery precisely at 11:30 AM, where Joe will be laid to rest with the dignity and gratitude he so faithfully earned.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Foundation (ALZ.org) or Nazareth Academy Grade School @ NazarethAcademyGradeSchool.net would be greatly appreciated by his family.
